biography

He was born in 1961 in Kaltern, Italy, where he also spent his school years.

From 1981 he studied agricultural sciences in Bologna. In 1983 he enrolled at the University Institute of Architecture in Venice (IUAV), where he graduated summa cum laude in 1990 under Vittorio Gregotti.

From 1990 to 1992 he was an inspector at the Provincial Monuments Office of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano/South Tyrol.

In 1992 he founded A5 Architekten together with Elena Galvagnini and Markus Scherer, and in 2001 the architectural office walter angonese architekt, based in Kaltern.

In 1999/2000 he was a guest lecturer at the Faculty of Architecture at the Technical University of Innsbruck.

From 2000 to 2011 he was a guest lecturer at various European schools of architecture (Liechtenstein, Vienna, Palermo, Venice, Viseo, ETH, Munich, Graz, Naples, Berlin, Darmstadt, Winterthur, Milan, etc.).

From 2007 to 2011 he was a visiting professor at the USI - Accademia di architettura, Mendrisio.

In 2011 he won the competition for a full professorship in architecture at the USI - Accademia di architettura.

From 2017 to 2021 he is Deputy Director for Research (with Sonja Hildebrand and Daniela Mondini respectively) at the USI - Accademia di architettura.

From 2017 to 2021 he is a member of the Senate of the Universita della Svizzera Italiana (USI) as a representative of the Accademia di architettura, and from 2021 as Director of the Accademia di architettura.

From 2017 to 2021 he is a member of the project group of the doctoral commission of the USI - Accademia di architettura.

From 2017 until today, he is the representative of USI - Accademia di architettura in ARAT (Architecture Council of Switzerland).

In 2017, he is the diploma director of the USI - Accademia di architettura, organised in the city of Salzburg.

He is a member and/or president of numerous competition juries and architecture awards in Austria, Switzerland, Italy and Germany.

He is an expert for the appointment of professors at various universities such as ETH, EPFL, TU Graz, Akademie München and Politecnico di Milano.

From 2015 to 2017 he was a member of the board of trustees of the MUSEION (Museum of Modern Art) in Bolzano.

He was curator for architecture at the Arge/Kunst - Galerie Museum in Bolzano for more than 10 years.

From 2009 to 2016 he was a member of the College for Landscape Protection of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano/South Tyrol.

From 2015 to 2018 he was chairman of the design advisory board of the city of Salzburg.

He was an advisor to the Austrian Federal Monuments Office.

He has been a member of the UNESCO Dolomites Scientific Committee since 2022.

He has been and continues to be an invited critic and guest lecturer for workshops at various European architecture schools and lectures on architecture.
